Glacier 3000 vs Titlis: which glacier day suits you?

Both are glacier mountains with a suspension bridge near 3,000 m, so the choice mostly comes down to where you are staying. Glacier 3000 and Titlis at a glance

On paper they look alike: a cable car to a glacier at about 3,000 m, snow all year and a suspension bridge with a long drop beneath. In practice they serve different parts of Switzerland. Titlis is central Switzerland's big mountain, an easy hop from Lucerne. Glacier 3000 is the high glacier of the Lake Geneva region and the Saanenland.

Two suspension bridges

Each mountain has its showpiece bridge, and they are close in size. Glacier 3000's Peak Walk is 107 m long and 80 cm wide, strung between the View Point and the Scex Rouge summit; Glacier 3000 says it is the only suspension bridge in the world linking two mountain peaks. On a clear day you see the Matterhorn, Mont Blanc and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. About 100 steps lead up to it.

The TITLIS Cliff Walk is 100 m long and 1 m wide, starting from a viewing platform at 3,041 m with a 500 m drop below, and Switzerland Tourism markets it as Europe's highest suspension bridge. The Peak Walk is included in the Glacier 3000 ticket.

What Glacier 3000 does best

Glacier 3000 is a mountain to spend the day on. The Ice Express chairlift, included in the ticket, drops you onto the glacier, and from there the Glacier Walk runs 3 km to the Quille du Diable and Refuge l'Espace. In winter there is dog sledding from November 2026 and a ski area from 7 November to 30 April; in summer the Alpine Coaster, which Glacier 3000 calls the highest rail toboggan run in the world.

At Scex Rouge, Restaurant Botta, designed by the Swiss architect Mario Botta, serves at the table, Le 3 is self-service, and a lift goes up to a rooftop terrace.

What Titlis does best

Titlis is the easiest glacier in Switzerland to reach from Lucerne and Zurich, and the ride is part of the fun: the TITLIS Rotair, which the Swiss Travel System describes as the world's first rotating cableway cabin, rotates as it climbs. Note that it is closed for maintenance until 11 December 2026, with TITLIS Connect carrying visitors meanwhile.

At the top, the Ice Flyer chairlift floats over glacier crevasses up to ten metres deep, and the TITLIS Tower has the Horizon Deck viewing platform and restaurants. The Swiss Travel System lists the summit as wheelchair-accessible. Holders of the Lucerne Travel Pass ride up free.

Getting there from Zurich, Lucerne, Interlaken and Lake Geneva

From Lucerne or Zurich, Titlis is the obvious choice: Zurich to Engelberg is about 73 minutes by car and Lucerne about 37, against two and a half to three hours to Glacier 3000. From Geneva, Lausanne or Montreux the picture flips, with Glacier 3000 between one and a half and two and a half hours closer by train. From Interlaken, Glacier 3000 is the quicker of the two, thanks to the direct GoldenPass Express to Gstaad.

Which should you choose?

Based in Lucerne or Zurich with one free day: Titlis. You can be at the top in little more than an hour from Lucerne and back in town for the evening.

Based in Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux or Gstaad: Glacier 3000. It is far quicker to reach from the lake, and coach day trips run from all three cities if you would rather not drive.

Want more to do than the view: Glacier 3000's ticket already includes the chairlift onto the ice and the Glacier Walk, and winter adds dog sledding. Want the rotating cable car and an easy half day from central Switzerland: Titlis, once the Rotair reopens in December.
